Tooth Brushes: Manual or Electric

Many patients ask us which toothbrush we would recomment for them,  manual or electric.  The answer really depends on the patient.  Both will do a great job if used properly.  The electric toothbrush such as a Sonicare is preferrable for most.  The reason is that it is a timed brushing session with little room for error. In addition, the electric toothbrush is less prone to allowing the user to brush too hard. Most of the tooth and gum damage that we see from toothbrushing is due to a "scrubbing" action rather than a "Messaging"  motion. In addition, all of the electric brishes are soft. Medium manual brushes are just too abrasive.

Should you have any questions as to which one we would recommend for you, please feel free to ask us at your next visit.
