Tips for Taking Care of Your Dental Crowns

Here’s what you can do to improve the longevity of your new crown.

Our dentist Dr. Herman Salzberg just placed your dental crown. Now what? Obviously, you want to keep your new teeth for as long as possible, which means following simple care instructions to keep your dental crown healthy and free from damage. Here are some ways to improve the lifespan of your new restoration,

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

It’s important that you are keeping your dental crown as clean as the rest of your natural teeth. Yes, we know your crown isn’t real but that doesn’t mean that you should just neglect it. In fact, you should treat it the same as your natural teeth, especially when it comes to oral care.

You should be brushing your teeth (including your crown) at least twice a day and flossing every day. If you have questions about brushing and flossing techniques, or what products are safe for your dental crown, our Palatine, IL, family dentist would be happy to answer your questions or provide you with recommendations.

Be Cautious of What You Eat

While dental crowns are made out of durable material it’s still important to be cognizant of what you’re eating and what could damage or pull your crown off. This is why you should avoid any foods that are too hard, crunchy or sticky. Some examples include,

  • Ice (crunching or chewing ice is a big no-no, even if you don’t have a crown)
  • Hard candy (especially if you have a tendency to crunch down on it)
  • Taffy or caramels

Nix Bad Habits

Do you grind your teeth at night? Do you unconsciously chew the end of your pencil at work? These are all habits that can wear down teeth and damage your crown. If you want to keep your crown lasting as long as possible (and we imagine you do), then you’ll want to talk to your dentist about helpful ways to ditch these habits for good. Your dentist may recommend wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth at night.
