FAQs about Dental Crowns

Could dental crowns offer the perfect solution for your smile issue? Your Palatine, IL, dentist, Dr. Herman Salzberg, can help you find out!

What are dental crowns?

Crowns, also called caps, slip over your teeth for complete coverage and protection. Made of life-like materials such as porcelain, Dental Crownsporcelain-fused-to-metal, ceramic, and resin, these restorations both resemble the appearance and durability of natural tooth enamel!

How can dental crowns help me?

Crowns are one of the most versatile dental restorations available today, and they are a good choice if you want to:

  • Improve the Way a Tooth Looks: Crowns hide discolored teeth, extend teeth that are too short, and can even completely change the shape of a tooth. Adding a crown is a simple way to alter the appearance of a crooked or twisted tooth.
  • Protect a Fragile Tooth: Cracks, brittle teeth, large fillings, and root canals can weaken teeth and increase the risk that they'll break. Luckily, crowns protect the fragile tooth underneath them by taking the brunt of biting forces.
  • Restore a Broken Tooth: Broken teeth are unattractive and make biting and chewing difficult. Your new crown will ensure that no one can tell you ever had an issue with your smile.
  • Fill Gaps in your Smile: Crowns are part of bridges, fixed dental appliances that replace missing teeth. They're also paired with dental implants to create new teeth. Implants are titanium posts that bond to your jawbone and replace missing tooth roots.

What happens when I receive a crown?

The first step in the dental crown process requires decreasing the size of your tooth by filing it on all sides. This allows for a perfect crown fit that feels and looks completely natural! After the tooth is prepared, your dentist will make an impression of your mouth to then send to a dental laboratory. The lab then uses these impressions to create a crown that is unique to your size and needs.

You'll wear a temporary crown for a few weeks while you wait for your permanent crown. Once the permanent crown is ready, you'll return to our Palatine dental office for your second appointment. After making a few small adjustments, your dentist will attach the restoration to your tooth with dental cement, and your new smile will be complete!
